FAQ

Who is MXI Environmental Services?

MXI has been in business since the 1960s serving our nationwide customer base with hazardous and nonhazardous waste transportation from our various facilities. We also operate waste transfer stations at Langhorne (hazardous waste), Abingdon (hazardous and solid waste), Sumter (hazardous waste) Malvern and Fontana (hazardous waste). Recognizing that our industrial and commercial customers needed assistance with environmental projects, in the 1990s we added an environmental services division, known as MXI Environmental Services.

What services does MXI Environmental provide?

MXI Environmental Services offers a wide range of disposal and recycling services at our Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) located in Abingdon, VA. We can also transport both hazardous and nonhazardous wastes on our own fleet of trucks. We operate waste transfer stations at Langhorne, PA (hazardous waste), Abingdon, VA (hazardous and solid waste), Sumpter, SC (hazardous waste), Malvern AR (hazardous waste) and Fontana, CA (hazardous waste).

What types of waste do you handle at the Abingdon Materials Recovery Facility (MRF)?

For a complete list of the waste streams MXI is approved to accept and handle, click here. If you have questions about the waste you need to process, contact Jim Monticello, MXIs director of environmental operations, at (732) 424-8441, ext. 107, or jimm@mxiinc.com. Alternatively, you can contact Scott Shaw, MXIs environmental manager, at scotts@mxiinc.com or (276) 628-6366, ext. 202. You can also complete and submit a material profile.

Can MXI process and dispose of my HHW waste?

Yes. Virginia adopted the federal exemption for processing HHW. We also secured a clarification from Virginia that allows MXI to receive HHW on a Hazardous Waste Manifest with Waste Codes. Our MRF has extensive experience processing HHW and we are expanding our capability to conduct collection events.

Can MXI help us set up Permanent Collection Sites?

Yes. MXI works with a number of communities to transport and process materials the community has collected at Permanent Collection locations. In addition, MXI will work with communities to put in place the facilities, manpower, training and procedures required to operate a Permanent site.

Will MXI become the generator for materials collected by MXI at a HHW collection event?

Yes. MXI can become the generator on the manifest for materials collected at a collection event that is manned by MXI personnel.

Can MXI transport waste from my facility?

MXI transports waste, including HHW waste in both truckload and less than truckload quantities, from customer facilities on MXI-owned trucks. MXI can transport both nonhazardous and hazardous wastes that are in liquid, solid, or semi-solid form. We can transport waste in drums, totes and tanks as well as other DOT approved containers. Click here for more information about our transportation services. Materials are required to be scheduled into the MRF before transport.

What is the Abingdon Material Recovery Facility emergency spill plan?

While we take every precaution to prevent accidental spills, MXI does have in place a minimization and response plan in the event of a spill. Since we are also waste transporters, all of our trailers are equipped with an over-pack drum and absorbent. Each tractor has a spill kit, absorbent and safety and cleanup equipment. Each driver has been trained in our spill response plan. At the Materials Recovery Facility (MRF), the facility itself is on an impervious material that has been graded to allow for accumulation rather than runoff of spilled materials. The MRF is equipped with over-pack drums, absorbent materials, spill response kits and materials handling equipment required to address any spill type. Our staff is continually trained to ensure that they know how to respond to any spill.

Can I get references for HHW that I can Contact?

Yes. MXI will provide you with specific references that you can contact.
