FAQ

Who is MXI Environmental Services?

MXI has been in business since the 1960s serving our nationwide customer base with hazardous and nonhazardous waste transportation from our various facilities.  We also operate waste transfer stations at Langhorne (hazardous waste), Abingdon (hazardous and solid waste), Sumter (hazardous waste) and Fontana (hazardous waste).  Recognizing that our industrial and commercial customers needed assistance with environmental projects, in the 1990s we added an environmental services division, known as MXI Environmental Services.

What services does MXI Environmental provide?

MXI Environmental Services offers a wide range of disposal and recycling services.  We can recycle or dispose of a wide range of materials.  We can receive consumer package goods, drums/totes or bulk alcohol byproducts.

What happens to waste at MXI's facilities?

MXI Environmental Services operates a Distilled Spirits Plant (DSP) and Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) that allows us to receive, process, and recycle ethanol and ethanol based products. This permit coupled with the exemption for ethanol removes the ethanol from Hazardous Waste Regulations.  MXI process recycles all packaging to include glass, aluminum, plastic, and cardboard.  The liquids are removed from the packaging in specially designed processing equipment.  The liquids are processed to recycle and refine the alcohol into fuel grade ethanol, a high octane automotive fuel which reduces our country's reliance on imported oil.

What other types of waste do you handle at the Abingdon Materials Recovery Facility (MRF)?

For a complete list of the waste streams MXI is approved to accept and handle, click here. If you have questions about the waste you need to process, contact Jim Monticello, MXI's director of environmental operations, at (732) 424-8441, ext. 107, or jimm@mxiinc.com.

Can MXI help us with characterization and packaging issues for my ethanol products?

Yes. We have staff that is available to consult on all of the characterization, packaging, documentation and transportation questions.

How do I get waste accepted by MXIs distilled spirits plant for recycling?

MXI's approval process is simple and straightforward.  Package goods can be accepted with a completed profile and MSDS.  Bulk waste has to be sample approved.  A copy of our material profile includes chemical and physical parameters of the ethanol and DOT shipping classifications.  The material will be tested upon receipt to ensure it complies with the sample and profile. This process ensures that the ethanol based materials comply with regulation and can be proceed at the DSP.

Can MXI transport the ethanol based material from my facility?

MXI transports ethanol and ethanol based products. We offer bulk transportation in vacuum trailers and both truck load and less than truckload quantities, from customer facilities on MXI-owned trucks. We can transport ethanol in package goods, drums, totes and tanks as well as other DOT approved containers.

What is the Abingdon Material Recovery Facility and Distilled Spirits Plant emergency spill plan?

While we take every precaution to prevent accidental spills, MXI does have in place a minimization and response plan in the event of a spill. Since we are also waste transporters, all of our trailers are equipped with an over-pack drum and absorbent. Each tractor has a spill kit, absorbent and safety and cleanup equipment. Each driver has been trained in our spill response plan. At the Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) and the Distilled Spirits Plant (DSP), the facility itself is on an impervious material with a liner and the site has been graded to allow for accumulation rather than runoff of spilled materials. The MRF and DSP are equipped with fire suppressant materials, over-pack drums, absorbent materials, spill response kits and materials handling equipment required to address any spill type. Our staff is continually trained to ensure that they know how to respond to any spill.

Can I see the SPCC and Emergency Response Plan?

You are invited to visit the facility to conduct an audit to include reviewing all of the associated documents. MXI is audited by the Virginia DEQ regularly and we will provide you with copies of all audits. The facility is located in the foot hills of the Blue Ridge Mountains and there are all the related facilities to allow for a comfortable visit. Call to arrange for an audit.
